Graduate Case Studies

  • Natalie Inkpin
  • MSci in Mathematics and Computer Science at Queen’s University, Belfast
I started with AquaQ Analytics in June 2013. I was greeted by an extremely friendly and supportive, close-knit network of colleagues. I hit the ground running and on the first day started my training as a Financial Software Developer!
AquaQ Analytics have a structured kdb+ training programme for all new graduates which is enhanced by weekly financial tutorials. We also take part in “Friday Challenges” which are practical mini-programming tasks.

constant help and guidance was provided by experienced team leadsNatalie Inkpin
After about 6 months training I was assigned to a team of Support Analysts at a Tier 1 Investment Bank. The platform we supported provided a vast range of tick data capture and analytics to global clients. Our goal was to provide continuous monitoring, maintenance and improvements to the system. The team structure within both the bank and our office meant that constant help and guidance was provided by experienced team leads. Working with such great people makes everything more enjoyable!

Support allows you to apply your investigative skills into what could be a critical trading issue to clients; providing the root cause and resolution to users in a professional, clear and helpful manner is key to understanding their requirements. The issues and client queries can vary day to day which keeps the job always interesting. The broad range of financial data such as equities stock (market depth and top of book), fixed income (bonds, swaps etc) and foreign exchange covered within the application meant that our team obtained a huge insight into understanding these assets. Dealing with the various server and data issues meant my technical skills continued to be enhanced in kdb+, linux/unix, SQL etc.

I have a new role now as a Support Specialist applying support standards across approximately 45 different applications. Originally, I was supporting one major application so the prospect that I can apply my skills and insight across multiple major applications is an extremely exciting one!

Working alongside a new team within this role will allow me to grasp new challenges and add even more to my skillset. It’s just one of the many opportunities AquaQ Analytics can give!

I joined AquaQ Analytics in November 2012. When I started AquaQ Analytics was a very small company with a headcount of less than 10 people. Now we have grown to in excess of 60 people! So far, it has been a very exciting and rewarding journey working and growing with the company.

AquaQ Analytics provided me with effective and helpful training material to help me progressWooikent Lee
Although I had limited knowledge in programming when I first joined, AquaQ Analytics provided me with effective and helpful training material to help me progress into what I’m capable of today. My colleagues have been very helpful in answering my questions and I received a lot of great advice from my one-on-one mentor. As part of my training development program I also undertook a course which covered various financial market concepts. This was essential to help me understand the different terms used by my clients!

Today, I’m very comfortable using KDB+. I am working with one of the world’s leading banks as a Kdb+ developer. My role involves setting up a tickerplant structure to capture data from different sources (Reuters, Bloomberg, internal feeds, etc.), providing real-time summary reports using Complex Event Processor (CEP), working with clients to understand their requirements, working with regulatory bodies to monitor trade activities and much much more!

I thoroughly enjoy my work as a Kdb+ developer as I am continuously learning new skills. My mentor always encourages me to push myself and right now my confidence is booming – I can demonstrate this through my contributions to the Kdb+ community.

I continue to see a lot of potential in AquaQ Analytics and I am very excited to see how much more the company can grow. Can’t wait!

  • PhD in Mathematics at The University of Nottingham
C oming from a background in pure mathematics, I had very little experience in IT when I joined AquaQ Analytics in February 2014. However, their excellent training program soon got me up to speed. The wide-ranging training not only covers KDB+ – a high performance database used in most Tier-1 investment banks – but it also includes more general software development concepts like Unix programming, version control and the software development life cycle.

I started out working in the Belfast office and, after completing my training, I was given the opportunity to work remotely on a few client projects as well as contributing to AquaQ’s in-house software products. The staff were really friendly and helpful and, as we were still a relatively small company, it had a very close-knit and relaxed atmosphere.

After about 10 months, I got the chance to move to London and work on-site for a major Tier 1 investment bank. I currently work on a large market data capture system operating in locations all over the world. The work is challenging but always varied and interesting especially getting to work with top-of-the-range technology to capture and process terabytes of data every day.

I am really enjoying my time with AquaQ Analytics. They have provided me with fantastic opportunities to work on interesting projects, both in their Belfast office and on-site in London. The company has grown considerably in the time that I have been here and I can only see us getting bigger still in the future!

  • Brian Riordan
  • BSc Applied Mathematics & Physics, Queens University Belfast
I started at AquaQ Analytics in March 2016. Having had virtually no computer science or programming experience the idea of throwing myself into that world was a bit daunting. The training you receive at AquaQ Analytics is second to none. From the outset I got the full AquaQ Analytics online kdb+ training course which brought me through the world of kdb+ step by step. As well as this my more experienced colleagues in the office were always more than willing to lend a hand along the way!

The training you receive at AquaQ Analytics is second to noneBrian Riordan
After the initial training I worked on various client projects associated with the AquaQ Analytics TorQ framework. This allowed me to put the skills and techniques I had learned during the training into practice as well as develop experience in using unix/linux based platforms. Furthermore, since the issues I had to deal with were not just hypothetical with the “correct answer” written in a book somewhere my understanding of kdb+ and programming in general increased greatly.

Since then, I’ve been working as part of a support team for an investment bank. In support you are faced with dealing with all sorts of different issues experienced by clients who are scattered all over the globe and in the fast-paced world of trading you never know exactly what issues you will have to deal with which keeps the day lively! Also through this role I get to interact with other teams within the bank who again can be based anywhere in the world which can give a real insight into how many mechanisms within the bank work. There’s no doubt that working as part of the support team puts you onto a worldwide stage with clients and other teams even with the majority of our team being based in Belfast.

The learning never stops and the opportunities keep coming at AquaQ Analytics. With our headcount increasing and the opening of our new office in the US the future looks bright for this young company!
