What attracted you to join AquaQ?

I joined AquaQ after completing an undergraduate degree in Economics and a Master’s degree in Computational Finance and Trading, both at Queen’s University Belfast. After graduating I was applying primarily for roles at Top Tier Investment Banks and I was surprised to learn that AquaQ were already working with many of these companies.

Unlike the highly competitive roles that I had been targeting, AquaQ were offering a full training package, allowing me to build a skillset that is in high demand from the world’s leading financial institutions, without having to relocate out of Belfast.

Where has your career progressed within AquaQ?

Thanks to the combination of AquaQ’s rapid growth and the continuous development training provided to me, I was very lucky to become to an assistant team lead and then take over a brand-new team within one year of joining. Since then, I’ve continued to develop both my management and technical skills and after 6 years with the company, I’m about to take on more responsibility on a bigger project with a new client.

What advice would you offer to any graduate/experienced candidate seeking a role in this area?

For any candidate interested in joining AquaQ, the best advice I could give them is to get involved in as much as they can! There are usually lots of events, both company-wide and team specific, as well as social and sporting groups that can be joined. AquaQ’s initial training and continuous development programs allow you to learn as you work and add to your skill set. AquaQ’s innovation pods even give employees a chance to suggest and work on their own ideas or topics they’re particularly interested in. As a company, I feel like there’s something for everyone and if you don’t find this is the case, there are lots of people who would be more than happy to help you introduce something new.

What is your typical day like?

For my particular role, no two days are alike. I run a team of support analysts, so we tackle challenges head on, as quickly as possible, as soon as they appear. This can mean you’re thinking of creative ways to solve problems, writing bug fixes or automation scripts for manual tasks, guiding users through issues, or leading a project strategy meeting. I also do a lot of development work for my team, so some days I’ll be immersing myself into code and getting to know the system back to front, searching for opportunities to make something faster or more efficient.

What are three benefits you’ve discovered about working here that you weren’t aware of when you started?

  1. There are opportunities for short term travel, as well as long term travel. I have visited London, New York and North Carolina for AquaQ events, training or working with clients directly.
  2. AquaQ offer a lot of flexibility to their employees, which allows for a great work-life balance.
  3. Employee Food Initiatives! – First Friday Free Food, and fruit delivered to the office twice a week.
